As a freelance writer, you know just how much time really matters to you. No matter how fast or efficient you are with your work, deadlines just keep coming at you and it is all you can do to grasp a couple of breaths along the way! And then, there is that much feared writer’s block lurking just around the corner, waiting to catch you off guard. Have no worry, though, because help is at hand. Becoming a good writer is not an insurmountable task to achieve. Writing talent can be acquired by way of hard work and practice; and by taking certain steps to increase speed and efficiency of writing.
Here are tips you can use to write faster and better with each passing day:
Set Your Writing Goals into Action
The main trick is to set your writing into different formats or templates, such as mentioned below. Follow the same or similar pattern of writing for each of these templates. Once you get used to this kind of writing, you will realize that you merely need to fill in the material each time you sit to write on a subject. You decide on your topic for the day, think of the format you want it in and then proceed ahead. This makes the whole process much faster and hassle-free.
- List of Ideas
Creating a list of ideas and documenting them in a folder will help you with a constant flow of article topics to choose from. Jot down your ideas as and when you can think of them. Did you discover a nice article on the Internet? Make a note of the central idea of that article and then build on it, taking your own perspective of it. Keep adding to your original list of ideas, so that you always have topics to write about.
Neatly listing your ideas under specific categories will help you come up with more ideas for each category. This also helps you keep your ideas folders uncluttered and neat-looking, thereby preventing unnecessary confusion.
- Your Blog’s Appearance
Next, you need to decide what exactly you want your blog or Website to look like. You have to decide on the number of columns for your blog, the content you want to insert in each column and so on. Planning your site design earlier on will help you customize your writing accordingly.
- The List Format
The list format involves putting your ideas under bullets, thus letting each point stand out prominently. While appearing appealing to the viewer’s eye, this also helps you come up with a clear idea of presenting your article. You can use this format to give tips, step-by-step guides, do’s and don’ts, exercises, directory listings and so on. Inserting a nice headline for each item in the list will help your reader gain a better understanding of your subject material.
- The FAQ Model
The FAQ model, as the name suggests, helps you assemble a list of the most frequently asked questions on your topic of discussion, also giving you enough scope to answer them in detail. You merely need to think of all the most important issues your readers could possibly come out with, and then jot them down systematically, also giving answers for each of the questions.
FAQ on Choosing the Right Blog Niche
- How-To’s
How-to’s are a very popular form of writing tutorials. Usually assembled in an orderly, logical way, this format works very well to give your readers step-by-step instructions, formulae or checklists.
- Personal Profile
This format involves preparing a sort of profile sheet of a person, with him or her answering the questions you have prepared for them. This interview template is simple to construct, and effectively draws a written portrait of the person you are profiling.
Develop Your Own Unique Writing Voice
- Top of the Line
Assembling a list of the “top” or “best” products or services never fails to grab reader attention. For better overall impact, put together your list in a chronological fashion.
- Guides 101
You can emerge as a master of your niche by writing regular guides or tutorials on your subject of interest. This guide format can include some or all of the above formats, neatly indexed chapter-wise.
How to Write Short Summaries Such as for Twitter
You can use the above-mentioned ideas to form more such formats or templates, so as to make your entire writing process smoother and speedier. Can you think of any more such ideas? Do share them with us!
Building a template or a format varies between publications or blog posts. Having a variety of options to open and fill is a great idea but beware of becoming stale or predictable. The constant search for new content and styles keeps things fresh. The other concern is being sure the ideas or the speak is yours and not a re-hash of another writer.
I build from news casts or magazine shows for new content. This usually inspires more in depth research to discover the bottom line or no nonsense talk that most of us crave. Just give it to me straight. This makes the information fresh and new and provides a wealth of links for further review by the reader. The use of bullets is an excellent tool to keep the reader focused and the writer on target.
Great points, Priya. To that, I will add, if it is suiting to you, the following basis point: Unless writing for exercise or pleasure, always treat the craft as a job and a business. Establish work hours and keep to the plan. Shut down your email during the creation of each article. Stay focused.
